smoke and mirrors

Yeah, it really was a ruse.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported yesterday that U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer has stated that the Bush Administration’s nationwide crackdown on Social Security number mis-matches, announced with righteous fanfare on August 10, was indeed, “not authorized by law.”

The plan has apparently been attacked not only by immigrant rights activists, but also unions, who claim many legally authorized workers would be discriminated against and possibly unfairly terminated, partly because the Social Security database is so full of errors.

Besides that, the 1986 laws, which set standards for employment authorization procedures, were never meant as a means for immigration enforcement.
